Expanded Learning Before and After School Programs

Expanded Learning Opportunities Program

The Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) provides additional funding to support before and after school programs, extended summer offerings, and intersessional programs for students in grades TK-6. The funding, authorized by AB 130, has enabled the District to expand before and/or after school programs to all elementary sites and offer full-day before and after school care for students in half day transitional kindergarten or kindergarten programs. All programs offer a minimum of 9 hours of programming including the school day.

Grant-Funded Expanded Learning Before and After School Programs

The After School Education and Safety (ASES), 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC), and After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens (ASSETs) Programs are state and federally funded programs. Grants are administered by the California Department of Education and are intended to provide safe and educationally enriching alternatives for children and youth during non-school hours.
 
The ASES, 21st CCLC, and ASSETs programs are Expanded Learning Programs designed to assist Elk Grove students and families after school and/or during the summer. This involves a partnership between home and school for the academic success of students and for the benefit of the entire family.

 

There are several components in these grant-funded Expanded Learning Programs:

 

  • Educational and Literacy Component that includes tutoring/ homework assistance in the core subjects (language arts, math, history/ social science, and science)
  • Educational Enrichment Component that offers students engaging activities in a variety of areas which may include visual and performing arts; physical activity; career technical education; prevention and intervention strategies; science, technology, engineering, and math; and more
  • Nutritious snack or meals offered daily that meet requirements in CA Education Code Section 49430
 
Programs are designed to assist TK through 12th grade students and their families by providing students with a place to study and learn after the school day while supporting family involvement with their student’s education. After school programs have been in operation since 2002 in Elk Grove, and the programs have become part of the District’s educational structure. ASES/21st CCLC/ASSETs Expanded Learning Programs are located at 17 elementary, 3 middle schools, and 3 high schools.
 
Who Participates?
Students in transitional-kindergarten through 12th grades have the opportunity to attend at designated school sites. The EGUSD first prioritizes enrollment for foster or homeless youth (identified students are accepted into the program regardless of waitlist status). Second priority is given to students who are identified by the State of California as unduplicated.  Third priority is given to students who are recommended based on criteria outlined by their school site. After priority enrollment at the elementary level, other students in grades TK-6 are added through a lottery process with an initial enrollment opportunity offered to all families in the spring for enrollment in the following school year. At the middle school level, priority enrollment is given to students who are able to attend on a daily basis. At the high school level, courses are offered based on student interest and any eligible students are invited to attend on a drop in basis. 

All elementary and middle school programs are taught and tutored by paraeducators at a student to staff ratio of 20:1 for grades 1-8 and 10:1 for TK and K. Additional support may be offered by credentialed teachers, bilingual teaching associates, retired teachers, future teachers from universities and high schools, parents, and community members. The high school programs are taught and tutored by credentialed teachers and paraeducators based on the needs and interests of students and do not have a minimum staffing ratio.
 
When Are Classes Held?
The ASES/21st CCLC Programs are open every day school is in session from the end of the regular school day until 6:00 p.m. Some sites offer additional opportunities during intersession and summer. Pre-registration for ASES/21st CCLC is required and families are expected to attend an orientation meeting explaining Expanded Learning Program guidelines. High school programs are drop-in programs offered before and after school on a daily basis with some additional opportunities on weekends or during the summer.

Continuous Quality Improvement
Elk Grove Unified School District seeks to evaluate and improve the quality of after school programs by engaging in a Continuous Quality Improvement process based on the Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California. Sunrise ExL Program
The ExL program is offered daily immediately after school until  6:00 pm. ExL is open every day that school is in session.
  • Completing this form allows us to know that you wish for your child to participate in ExL. 
  • Completing this form does NOT enroll your student(s) in the ExL program. 
  • Students are selected for the ExL program based on a priority system outlined by the State of California.  
  • If the ExL program is at capacity, then completing this form will place your student on the wait list.
  • Students on the wait list are not guaranteed entry during the school year.
  • At 3:05 p.m. all school age student (1st-6th) will walk themselves to the cafeteria and will be checked in by their group teacher.
  • Students will be provided with a snack everyday and time to complete any homework they may have.
  • After homework and snack time students will then be able to choose from doing individual activities and crafts or enjoy outside recess weather permitting.
