EGUSD celebrates Walk to School Day

International Walk to School Day

Walkers, bikers, skateboarders and scooters took to the sidewalks throughout Elk Grove Unified as students, parents and other family members participated in International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 7.

Since the first National Walk to School Day in 1997, the event has grown into International Walk to School Day with participants in all 50 states and numerous countries around the world.  The event promotes safe walking habits amongst students, including walking to school with a friend and crossing at a crosswalk.  It spotlights safe walking routes to school and helps connect schools to their surrounding community.  Walk to School Day also promotes the health benefits of physical activity.

“Walk to School Day presents a perfect opportunity to highlight important issues that students need to be aware of in walking to and from school and to promote the health benefits of walking,” said Donna Cherry, associate superintendent of elementary education at Elk Grove Unified.  “Each year, it is exciting to see what new and innovative ideas our schools have created to commemorate Walk To School Day with their students.”

Participation in Walk to School Day has grown exponentially over the years at Elk Grove Unified.  Foulks Ranch Elementary School was the first EGUSD school to participate in the event in 2002.  This year, all EGUSD elementary schools will participate in Walk to School Day with many activities.  For some, Walk to School Day has turned into Walk to School Month – and at Carroll Elementary School, students, staff and parents will keep walking throughout the school year on “Walk to School Wednesdays.”

“This year, we decided to take Walk to School Day to a new level by turning Walk to School Month into Walk to School Wednesdays,” said Elizabeth Rueda, vice-principal at Carroll.  “We have already seen a decrease in the amount of automobile traffic around our school on Wednesdays, which is great not only because it is much safer for our students as they walk, but it cuts down on air pollution as well.”

At Carroll, students arrived at school on foot and on wheels.  “Walking school buses” picked up students and parents at three locations throughout the neighborhood around Carroll.  As students arrived on campus, the sounds of the Franklin High School Jazz Band greeted them.  The “Banana Man” from Jamba Juice distributed discount coupons to the first 400 students to arrive and Clif Bar & Company gave out free Clif Bars from their booth.  One of the highlights of the program was a Zumba class led by Carroll sixth grader Talia Green.

Foulks Ranch also recognized Walk to School Day with a variety of events.  Walking school buses picked up students from eleven stops throughout the surrounding neighborhood.  When students arrived on campus, they attended a health and safety fair where they could participate in a raffle, visit safety booths and enjoy entertainment.

“Walk to School Day has grown into a great tradition for our school,” said Mary Beth Kropp, principal at Foulks Ranch.  “From its humble beginning in 2000 to now, it is now a day our whole community looks forward to.  Walk to School Day just used to be a day, but I really think it has lead to more families walking to school every day.  Our hope is that trend continues to grow every year, keeping every day a Walk to School Day.”

For the schools in rural areas where walking to school is not an option, students and staff walked the tracks or their blacktop areas.  Teachers led discussions about making healthy and safe choices when students are out walking or riding their bikes.
