Widely acknowledged as one of the top PreK-12 school districts in California, Elk Grove Unified enjoys a well deserved reputation for its commitment to innovative educational opportunities that encourage excellence in all students.

EGUSD’s efforts towards continuous improvement begins with its mission statement “to provide a learning community that challenges ALL students to realize their greatest potential.” The bold goals are supported with a focus on 10 initiatives: academic achievement; the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE); culturally responsive practices; English learners; extended learning opportunities; leadership development; professional learning; site support teams; and special education.

Elk Grove Unified prides itself on setting high goals – and surpassing them. During the 2009-2010 school year EGUSD will continue its quest to meet its Bold Student Achievement Goals in the pursuit of closing the achievement gap. The district will continue to strive to increase the number of students who are proficient in English language arts (ELA) and math as measured by the California Standardized Tests (CSTs) and Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR). The district also will continue its work in helping all students pass CAHSEE and prepare for college and career.
The district also will maintain its focus in assisting English Language learner students to achieve success. English Language learner students will benefit from several programs this year. English Language Development (ELD) will be implemented at all elementary schools, along with ongoing support to increase the efficiency of the program. Regular school site visits by district professional learning coaches will be provided to support teachers in the implementation of ELD programs. The EL After School Academic Language program will be implemented with funding from the Central Valley Foundation.

To reach the target of having 75 percent of 10th grade students in each subgroup pass CAHSEE, the district will use a new approach to reach new heights on CAHSEE testing. Elementary and middle school students will have access to sample CAHSEE tests at school. The district plans to expand its focus on pre CAHSEE curriculum, strategies and professional learning for teachers as well as information for parents in grades 4-9.
Communications around CAHSEE requirements and changes in legislation will be provided to special education parents through newsletters, websites and monthly advisory council meetings. Professional learning opportunities will be available for special education teachers and administrators as well. With these programs in place, the district hopes to reach the goal of 100 percent participation of 10th grade students taking CAHSEE to meet AYP.

College and career planning will continue to be a big focus this year as well. Laguna Creek High School is on pace to finalize its application process for the implementation of an International Baccalaureate program. The district also remains focused on informing students and parents about the importance of A-G courses, the classes required for admission into University of California and California State University schools. In addition to progress at the middle and high school levels, fee-based options will be promoted at the adult education level.

Essential to the work in meeting these goals EGUSD will include programs that ensure teachers are well-equipped to assist students in the areas they will need help. Ongoing professional learning opportunities are offered to provide both general and special education teachers with the proper tools to help their students close the achievement gap and to ensure optimal delivery of core instruction. Providing opportunities for teachers to enhance their data analysis skills and having opportunities to discuss evidence-based practices will be a focus of professional learning. To continue to increase the academic achievement of all of our students, site and district workshops will be provided to support this important work.
