No Excuses – Go to School Attendance Campaign returns for 6th year

The No Excuses – Go to School Attendance Campaign will kick off its sixth year when it launches on September 6, 2011.  The campaign is designed to encourage students to attend school consistently in all grades. The attendance campaign stretches beyond school attendance and into the theme of responsibility. Elk Grove Unified believes that by teaching students that life is about showing up and being counted, they will be more successful as adults.

Student support for the Attendance Campaign is sought through monthly incentives donated by local businesses and community members.  Every month at 63 EGUSD schools a list is compiled of students with perfect attendance.  From that list, one student’s name is drawn to receive an incentive prize.  In addition, the names of students with perfect attendance for each calendar month are entered into a drawing for the grand prize at the end of the school year.  The Attendance Campaign also reaches out to parents and community members through school newsletter articles, press releases, letters home, posters, and flyers.

The 2010/2011 No Excuses – Go to School Attendance Campaign was one of the most successful years yet for Elk Grove Unified.  Average Daily Attendance (ADA) increased by .38 percent, netting an additional $1.4. million in funding for the district.

The Elk Grove Auto Mall (EGAM) Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive will also return for its sixth year in 2011/2012, giving students with at least five months of perfect attendance and a 2.0 GPA in the Class of 2012 the opportunity to win $20,000 to purchase a vehicle from any dealership at the Elk Grove Auto Mall.  Click here for more information about the Elk Grove Auto Mall 2011/2012 Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive.

Through the EGAM Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive, students can earn entries in the contest for each month of perfect attendance throughout the 2011/2012 school year.  At the end of the year, one student from each comprehensive high school and one student representing all alternative high schools are selected to attend the Grand Finale event for a chance to win the grand prize.

Last year, Melayne Alexander from Elk Grove High School took home the $20,000 grand prize.  She purchased a silver Toyota Corolla with her winnings.  Nine runners-up each received a $100 VISA gift card.  The runners-up were: Elizabeth Schneider (Cosumnes Oaks High School), Tai Huynh (William Daylor High School), Nancy Xiong (Florin High School), Nicholas Ruebel (Franklin High School), Gagandeep Saini (Laguna Creek High School), Justin Phan (Monterey Trail High School), Xochitl Orozoco (Pleasant Grove High School), Kile Casto (Sheldon High School) and Jeanette Dominguez (Valley High School).

Elementary school students also had a shot at earning an end-of-the-year grand prize for having perfect attendance. The Perfect Attendance Bike Giveaway allows each of Elk Grove Unified’s 39 elementary schools to award one new bicycle and helmet to one student who obtained perfect attendance for at least one calendar month throughout the school year through the Perfect Attendance Bike Giveaway. Students had the chance to earn entries in a drawing for each month they achieved perfect attendance. At the end of the year, one student was selected from amongst the entries at each school site to win the bicycle and helmet.

Middle and high school students had the chance to win a new iPod Shuffle at the end of the school year.  To be eligible, students had to have perfect attendance – for the entire year – from August 16, 2010 to May 6, 2011.

New for this year, middle school and high school students in grades 9-11 will also have a chance to win an end-of-the-year grand prize through the Perfect Attendance Laptop Giveaway.  One middle school and one high school student in grades 9-11 will walk away with a new laptop computer and printer at the end of the year – just for having at least one month of perfect attendance.  Similar to the Bike Giveaway, students will earn entries for each month they have perfect attendance.  At the end of the school year, one student from each middle school and one student from each high school will be selected from the entries to attend a Grand Finale Event for the chance to win the grand prizes.

The 2010/2011 No Excuses – Go to School Attendance Campaign would not have been possible without the support of various businesses, community groups and individuals in the Elk Grove and Sacramento communities.
