Breakfast at Elk Grove Unified

Rise and shine!  For Elk Grove Unified students at 38 elementary schools, all middle schools and 10 high schools, the option for a healthy breakfast awaits upon their arrival at school.

The breakfast program at Elk Grove Unified has proven to be quite popular.  During the 2009/2010 school year alone, the Food and Nutrition Services department served over 1.9 million breakfasts to students throughout the district.

"It’s a well-known fact that breakfast is the most important meal of the day," said Michelle Drake, Director of Food and Nutrition Services for the district.  "However, this is especially true for children.  Research shows that kids who eat breakfast are more likely to have healthier diets, better test scores and consistent school attendance.  Offering breakfast for students is an excellent way to start the day at our schools."

In fact, not only is eating breakfast important, but the concept of eating breakfast at school is beneficial as well.  According to the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, participation in school breakfast is associated with improved math grades, attendance and punctuality.

Elk Grove Unified’s breakfast program begins a half hour before the first school bell.  The cost for elementary school students is $1.25 and $1.50 for secondary school students.  Families who qualify for free and reduced lunches also qualify for breakfast at no cost.

Students have an array of healthy selections to choose from, including bagels, muffins, cereals, fruits, burritos, turkey pancake wraps, lumberjack French toast and sunrise sandwiches.

“We’re always looking for new ways to provide breakfast to more of our students,” said Drake.  “Last year, we debuted a breakfast venture at Samuel Jackman Middle School called ‘Breakfast Break.’  We provided a second meal service between 1st and 2nd period where students have a 15 minute break to grab breakfast.  The Breakfast Break menu is condensed to include one entrée choice, a fruit/juice choice and milk.”

Parents also have the option of pre-paying for their student’s meals by using MyLunchMoney.com. This service allows parents to view student purchases, set spending limits and has the ability to send an email to alert parents when an account balance is low.
