Time Capsule Sealing Ceremony concludes 50th Anniversary Celebration

With the sealing and lowering of the shiny silver time capsule into its resting place and the sliding of a concrete slab, the Elk Grove Unified School District’s 50th Anniversary Celebration came to a fantastic end.

Music provided by the Pleasant Grove High School Jazz Band greeted over 250 people as they arrived at the Time Capsule Sealing Ceremony on Tuesday, June 9th at the Robert L. Trigg Education Center.

Ladd was joined by EGUSD Board President William Lugg, Jr. to welcome attendees to the event.  Following the welcome, the Florin High School and Valley High School Jr. ROTC units presented the colors as Ryanna Declines, a 2009 graduate of Edward Harris, Jr. Middle School, lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Following the pledge, 2009 Laguna Creek High School graduate Sean Nill sang “America the Beautiful.”

Several resolutions and proclamations were presented to the district in honor of the 50th Anniversary Celebration.  Michelle Panos, representing U.S. Congressman Dan Lungren, presented a resolution on behalf of the congressman.  Christopher Flores, representing U.S. Congresswoman Doris Matsui, read the message Matsui read into the congressional record in Washington D.C. recognizing and congratulating the district on 50 years of educational excellence.  Resolutions and proclamations were also presented from Colleen Haley representing California State Assemblymember Joan Buchanan, Dillon Delvo representing California State Senator Lois Wolk, Robert Spiegel representing California State Senator Dave Cox, Pat Braizel representing Sacramento County Supervisor Don Nottoli, councilmember Sophia Scherman from the City of Elk Grove and board president Michelle Orrock from the Cosumnes Community Services District.

Following the presentation of proclamations and resolutions was the crowd-pleasing performance of the gold-medal winning Oral Language Faire verse choir group from Elitha Donner Elementary School.  The students prepared a special presentation in honor of the district’s 50th Anniversary.  The performance included a variety of important people, places and events from throughout the district’s history.

Finally, Robert Pierce, associate superintendent of facilities and planning, invited Arlene Hein, as well as Ladd, Lugg, former EGUSD superintendent Robert L. Trigg and Pleasant Grove High School student Chris Utterback to help him unveil the time capsule and its structure.  The group lowered and sealed the time capsule into the structure.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, attendees were invited to view the time capsule structure up close.  “Save the Date” cards were passed out to all in attendance, inviting them to return to the Education Center in 50 years on June 9, 2059 for the official opening of the 50th Anniversary time capsule at the district’s centennial celebration.
