On Wednesday, May 27, the 2008/2009 Elk Grove Auto Mall Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive came to a dramatic conclusion when Sheldon High School senior Rachel Anderson chose the lucky key.  After a short drum roll - provided by Pleasant Grove High School's drum line – Anderson started a teal Nissan Cube to claim the $20,000 grand prize.

For the third year in a row, the Elk Grove Auto Mall provided a $20,000 grand prize for a graduating senior with perfect attendance for at least one month.  Students earned entries for each month of perfect attendance throughout the 2008/2009 school year to earn the chance to win the grand prize.

Overall, the 2008-2009 school year marked the third year of the No Excuses – Go to School Attendance Campaign, designed to encourage students to attend school consistently in all grades. The attendance campaign stretches beyond school attendance and into the theme of responsibility. Elk Grove Unified believes that by teaching students that life is about showing up and being counted, they will be more successful as adults.

Middle and high school students had the chance to earn a new iPod Shuffle at the end of the school year.  To be eligible, students had to have perfect attendance – for the entire year – from August 25, 2008 to May 22, 2009.

Elementary school students also had a shot at earning an end-of-the-year grand prize for having perfect attendance. Each of Elk Grove Unified’s 39 elementary schools will award one new bicycle and helmet to one student who obtained perfect attendance for at least one calendar month throughout the school year through the Kaiser Permanente Bike Giveaway. Students had the chance to earn entries in a drawing for each month they achieved perfect attendance. At the end of the year, one student was selected from amongst the entries at each school site to win the bicycle and helmet.
