Student Health Access and Referral Project Grant and Free Immunization Clinics

August 1, 2012

EGUSD’s Student Support and Health Services has been awarded $36,052 from Kaiser Permanente to continue the work under the Student Health Access and Referral Project (SHARP). This is the fourth grant from Kaiser Permanente supporting SHARP, bringing the overall funding support for the project to $149,931.

The goals of the SHARP grant include increasing access to the immunization and dental services required for school attendance; increasing the number of service referrals of children and families who do not have access to health care or do not have a medical home through coordination with the District's Healthy Start Program; and to actively participate as a partner and support the goals set forth in the HEAL Zone Initiative serving the Valley Hi community.

The SHARP staff team, in partnership with the district’s nursing team, Healthy Start and Foster Youth staff, successfully hosted 13 immunization clinics last school year providing free vaccines to 1,677 EGUSD students. In addition, the SHARP team, in partnership with Healthy Start, was able to provide oral health screenings to over 2,200 students.

Current California law requires that students entering 7th grade in 2012-2013 provide schools proof that they have received an adolescent pertussis (whooping cough) booster shot (Tdap) prior to starting school. The Tdap booster shot can be obtained through your medical practitioner, at many pharmacies, or through free clinics.

Two free immunization clinics will be held in August for students who don’t have health insurance, who are on Medi-Cal or who are Alaskan Native/American Indian:

Tuesday, August 14, 2012
3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Wednesday, August 15, 2012
8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

All immunizations required for school entry (including Tdap) will be provided for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. A parent/legal guardian must accompany the student. Bring your child’s Immunization Card (yellow card) or “Out of Compliance” letter from their school. NO appointment needed. All school-age children must have their shot record with them.

After students receive the Tdap booster shot, parents should bring the written proof to the front office at their current school before the start of school on August 16, 2012.
