What's Happening - Calendar of Events – November 9-14

Here is what’s going on in the Elk Grove Unified School District during the week of November 9-14:

November 10:  Students and staff at Samuel Kennedy Elementary School will remember those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces with a Veterans Day Celebration from 9:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.

November 10:  The EGUSD Community Advisory Committee (CAC) for special education will meet from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Robert L. Trigg Education Center.  This month’s topic is communication and counseling resources for families with children in special education.

November 10 & 12:  Students at John Reith Elementary School will enjoy presentations from the Sacramento Zoo’s Docent Outreach Program.  In this 40-45 minute program, docents narrate an action-packed video illustrating the zoo animals’ adaptations to different habitats. The video is followed by a felt animal habitat activity.

November 11:  Today all Elk Grove Unified School District schools and offices will be closed in observance of Veterans’ Day.

November 12-14:  Theater students at Elk Grove High School will perform “Found a Peanut,” the story of eight children coming of age and learning about life and death in New York City in the 1950s.  Show times start at 7 p.m. on all nights.  The cost of tickets is $5 and children 3 and under are free.

November 12-14:  Monterey Trail High School’s drama department will present “MacB: The MacBeth Project, by the African-American Shakespeare Company,” a play depicting Shakespeare’s tale of corrupting power as it unfolds against the backdrop of the record industry.  Aspiring hip-hop mogul MacB claws his way to the top and ultimately meets his downfall amid the commentary of the Three Witches – the “not-so Dreamgirls.”  Show times start at 7 p.m., with an additional matinee showing at 4 p.m. on November 14.  Tickets are $8 for general admission and $6 for students, senior citizens and children.

November 12-14:  Pleasant Grove High School theater students will present “In Context,” an original comedy created by Pleasant Grove drama teacher Renee Fritz about teenagers in the world of text messaging and Facebook.  Show times begin at 7 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee on November 14.  Tickets are $9 general admission and $8 for students with an ASB sticker.

November 12-14:  Theater students at Sheldon High School will present “Dead Man Walking” as their fall production.  The play chronicles Sister Helen’s eye-opening journey with two men on death row to the execution chamber and her awakening to the realities of the criminal justice system and the use of capital punishment.  Shows begin at 7 p.m.  Tickets are $8 for general admission.

November 13:  Students at Barbara Comstock Morse Elementary School will enjoy two Captain Jerry Traffic assemblies at 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.  The assemblies encourage volunteering and answer questions about safety.  Students will receive coloring books, pencils and stickers with safety messages.

November 13-14:  Theater students at Laguna Creek High School will present “Murder in the Heir,” the story of Simon Starkweather – a tyrannical billionaire – who is found dead in his home when his family comes to visit.  The audience gets to participate in the performance as they decide who is guilty and the students will change the end of the play to accommodate the audience’s decision.  Shows start at 7:30 p.m.  The cost is $5 in advance and $7 at the door.

November 14:  Cosumnes Oaks High School will host the 1st Annual Wolf Trot 5K Fun Run starting at 8 a.m. at their stadium.  There will be two kids’ runs at 8 a.m. and 8:20 a.m.  The 5K race begins at 8:45 a.m.  The cost is $20 per person before race day and $25 on race day.  The cost per family is $50.
