EGUSD teacher named Sacramento County Teacher of the Year

September 3, 2009

JoEllen Shanks, a second grade teacher at Stone Lake Elementary School in the Elk Grove Unified School District, has been selected as one of two recipients of the Sacramento County Teacher of the Year 2010 award.

Both Shanks and Criss Brandes, a third grade teacher at Robert J. Fite Elementary School, were chosen as Elk Grove Unified School District’s 2009 Teachers of the Year in May.  Shanks and Brandes were recognized along with 13 other Sacramento County teachers at the Sacramento County Office of Education’s Annual Celebration of Educators on September 2, 2009.

Shanks was presented with the Sacramento County Board of Education’s Elinor L. Hickey Award of Merit – the highest honor bestowed by the Board – and with a trophy from the Sacramento Scottish Rite Bodies of Freemasonry.

A 13-year employee of the district, Shanks has also worked as a second and third grade teacher at Foulks Ranch Elementary School.  Shanks has served as a Master Teacher and provided instructional coaching for her fellow teachers. She has served as a Grade Level Leader, as well as an Elk Grove Trainer of Trainers and an SST Coordinator and Meeting Facilitator.  In addition to these commitments, Shanks also assisted and helped facilitate an after-school mentor program.

Deb House, a sixth grade teacher from San Juan Unified School District, was also selected as Sacramento County Teacher of the Year for 2010.

Both Shanks and House are now eligible to advance to the statewide competition, where five teachers will be chosen as California Teachers of the Year.  The five California Teachers of the Year are responsible for representing the teaching profession in a variety of settings and assisting their colleagues in numerous ways throughout the calendar year of 2010.
