As we approach the 2008-2009 school year, the Elk Grove Unified School District is preparing for a special celebration – a celebration that comes only once. This coming school year will mark 50 years of excellence by design in the education of our community’s youth.
While the opportunity to recognize the district’s milestone comes amidst budgetary struggles, we cannot let these times deprive our school district and community of this special occasion. We will not let the state’s economic downturn get in the way of celebrating our rich and diverse history. For 50 years the Elk Grove Unified School District has provided a quality education to all students in our community. We are an award winning district that has set a high standard of excellence.
Our successes have led us to create a theme for this celebration: “EGUSD Goes Gold – Celebrating 50 Years of Educational Excellence.”
In the coming year we will record, teach and learn about the history of our community. These lessons will take place at board meetings, in classrooms and at events planned throughout the year.
We will celebrate through a student and staff produced district documentary that will be shown in segments at board meetings. We will showcase the talent of both staff and students in two separate shows. We will have a grand community gathering on June 13, 2009, with a picnic in the park and fun run.
Please know that these events will be paid for through contributions from alumni and community groups and organizations. Some of the events are also fundraisers for scholarships for our students. Information about events will be listed on a special anniversary website, www.egusd.net/50years.
I hope that you join us in the celebration of our 50 years of service. This is a time to rejoice in the teaching and learning that have contributed to creating a rich and vibrant community that we all enjoy.
