Superintendent's Message

At the Elk Grove Unified School District safety is one of our top priorities.  Providing a safe and positive learning environment requires everyone to work together:  teachers, administrators, parents and community members.  Our work never ends.

We are fortunate to have a strong Police Services Division, which partners with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department to supply our School Resource Officers and other sworn personnel. Other outside agencies such as Elk Grove Police, Sacramento City Police, Rancho Cordova City Police and the California Highway Patrol provide strong coordinated support to our schools. We directly employ a chief, deputy chief and three sergeants, who specialize in school and youth law, as well as coordinate safety and informational trainings for schools and community members.

The Sacramento Regional Office of Homeland Security has selected Elk Grove Unified School District as a partner in designing and conducting a South Sacramento County multi-agency exercise called “Laguna Rescue.” This exercise will take place on March 19, 2008.  We are grateful to have been selected for this exercise.  Also please know that all EGUSD sworn law enforcement personnel train on a regular basis and have participated in active shooter scenarios over the past few years at different high school campuses throughout the district.  These trainings, like the upcoming exercise, involve personnel from other local general law enforcement agencies.

In addition, we have recently concluded a series of safety trainings with teams from each school that included the principal, vice principal, teacher-in-charge, school secretary and lead custodian.  Throughout the year we will be building on these trainings with our school administrators who will in turn take the information back to their site staff, students and site safety councils.

School leadership teams meet to go over school safety plans and procedures. Our schools regularly conduct drills.  Each campus contains a Crisis Response Box that contains critical information designed to assist law enforcement, and other authorities in any emergency situation.

In order to protect all students, Elk Grove Unified has high standards of student civility and deportment.  We do not tolerate student behavior that causes serious physical injury to another person, involves a weapon at school, or sales of drugs. Any of these actions will result in the student being disciplined, as outlined in our code of student conduct.  Depending on the incident, if it is determined that the student’s actions are criminal it may also result in an arrest by the appropriate law enforcement authority. Teachers and administrators work hard to inform students and parents of what is expected and our work to enforce the policy.

At all our schools we stress the need for open communication about incidents that affect our school community.  We encourage students, parents and community members to come forward with information about suspicious activities.  We utilize the We Tip program, a 24-hour anonymous tip line at 1-800-78-CRIME.  We investigate all reports fully.  When a report of an incident possibly affects the safety of other students, we make every effort to communicate with parents and students via letters home.

Our district is committed to maintaining safe and healthy environments in which our students can thrive.  There is no immunization that can protect us from every event, but by working together we can all do our part to keep our students, staff, parents and community safe.
