Superintendent's Message

On October 17, all Elk Grove Unified high school sophomores had a unique opportunity to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) free of charge during their school day through the district’s “PSAT for All” program.

After a successful launch of the program last year, the district continued to pay the cost of the test for all 10th graders who opt to take it.  Typically, students pay about $13 each to take the exam.

The PSAT is perhaps best known as a practice run for the Scholastic Aptitude Test, an entrance requirement for some colleges and universities.

But another lesser known bonus of this exam is that it provides important information to school staff about where students are on the spectrum of courses. There are often students who are ready to take advanced classes who may not realize their potential.  The PSAT results help identify those students who are ready for college level courses, including Advanced Placement classes. Advanced Placement courses stand out on a college resume and may count towards college credit if a student scores high on an AP test.

The numbers coming out of last year’s program reinforce the district’s initiative.  Through the “PSAT for All” model implemented in the fall of 2006, approximately 3,460 sophomore students took the PSAT free of charge. This represented a 362% increase over the previous year’s test participation, when students had to pay to take the exam.
