The autumn months are a wonderful time at our high schools. Homecoming festivities have begun. Students are making floats, holding parades and preparing for fall dances. Football games are attracting large crowds and community interest, and another academic year is well under way.
I’ve been making my rounds of school visits. In classroom after classroom I witness the hard work, creativity and dedication that are the components of teaching and learning at Elk Grove Unified schools.
Several schools are already building on the theme of celebration as Elk Grove Unified recognizes its 50th Anniversary. I was recently at Union House Elementary, where parents, students and staff joined in celebration of the school’s 20th birthday. The community support was remarkable.
Cosumnes River Elementary School is planning a 60th Anniversary celebration on October 24. I am pleased to see our schools build upon the district’s 50th Anniversary celebration and all the work that goes into making each school a success.
I enjoy all my visits to our schools. One visit took me to Elk Grove High School, a day after students had held a town hall meeting to tackle the problem of underage drinking. The town hall discussion is a wonderful example of the leadership we find among our young people.
Later that day, I joined business and community members at the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce’s annual Salute to Education at Elk Grove High. More than 950 Elk Grove Unified third-graders visited the school’s agriculture program. It’s inspiring to see the interaction between the children, our high school students and community members.
The latest state and federal accountability systems demonstrate our schools continue to show progress. The Elk Grove Unified School District its improved overall academic performance and showed progress for many subgroups in the 2007-2008 school year, according to the California's Accountability Progress Reports released on September 4, 2008.
The latest reports establish Elk Grove Unified as the only district in California of comparable size not in program improvement or with any Title I schools in program improvement.
The last weeks have been an interesting financial time in our country. With the recent volatility of the U.S. economy, we are all watching the impact on California. In the meantime, we will wait and see how this plays out.
May the 2008-2009 school year continue to bring our students success.
